Crusader Kings III Steam Deck: mouse and keyboard setup for a Playable-only grand strategy

Menus are legible but cramped, dozens of hotkeys have no controller equivalent, and text entry (naming a character, searching) keeps popping the on-screen keyboard over the map.

Steam Deck Playable

Valve's own Steam Deck Compatibility notes list text size, manually invoking the keyboard, the launcher, and the lack of full controller support as the reasons it's rated Playable rather than Verified.

Crusader Kings III was designed for a mouse and a keyboard full of hotkeys, and it shows — Valve’s own Playable rating calls out exactly that. A controller can move a cursor around the map, but it can’t replace the dozens of shortcuts the game leans on once you’re a few hours in.

Step by step

  1. Pair your phone as mouse and keyboard

Connect Deck Pointer over Bluetooth from the Deck's settings, exactly like any Bluetooth mouse/keyboard combo.

  2. Use the trackpad for precise map and menu clicks

The analog trackpad tracks 1:1 with your finger, so selecting a small county on the map or a tight menu button doesn't fight the Deck's built-in trackpads' dead zones.

  3. Send real hotkeys instead of hunting for a gamepad binding

Type any of the game's dozens of keyboard shortcuts directly — no need to memorize or remap them onto face buttons.

    CtrlF
  4. Type character and search text with a real keyboard

Naming choices, the character finder, and any other text field get typed straight from your phone instead of the Deck's laggy on-screen keyboard.

What people are saying

  • “Crusader Kings III is marked as Steam Deck Playable by Valve for text size, invoking the keyboard manually, the launcher, and the lack of full controller support.”

Other ways to try first

Community controller layouts
Community-made Steam Input layouts (e.g. Gimler's Crusader Kings III) map many hotkeys to buttons, but can't cover every menu action or text field.
A plain Bluetooth mouse and keyboard
Works just as well for input, but is one more device to carry, charge and pair — Deck Pointer uses the phone you already have.

Questions, answered

Is Crusader Kings III ever going to be Verified?

Only Valve can change that rating, and it depends on adding real controller support — unlikely for a game this dense in menus and hotkeys. Playable is the ceiling for now.

Does this work for other Paradox grand strategy games?

Yes — Stellaris, Hearts of Iron IV, Victoria 3 and Europa Universalis IV share the same Playable rating and the same underlying problem: mouse-and-keyboard design with no native controller support.
